Doctors told about the benefits of lavender oil.
Lavender oil can be used to combat the increasing incidence of resistant fungal infections, according to the microbiologists of the University of Coimbra in Portugal.
Essential oil of lavender has a potent antifungal effect against strains of the common fungi responsible for infections of skin and nails.
The effect of lavender oil was tested on a range of pathogenic fungi and found that the extract of the plant destroys a series of skin-pathogenic strains known as dermatophytes, as well as various types of bacteria Candida. Dermatophytes cause infections of the skin, hair and nails as they use the keratin within these tissues to obtain nutrients.
Bacterial species of Candida may also occur in healthy individuals without causing problems but may cause skin and mucous candidiasis or thrush – in some people. In patients with immune deficiencies, Candida can cause serious infection if the fungal cells enter the blood.
Treatments available such infections often have side effects. At the same time, in the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of cases of bacterial resistance to drugs and the overall prevalence of fungal diseases, particularly among patients with weakened immune systems.
Lavender essential oil can serve as a cheap and reliable alternative to standard treatment, because it has sedative, antioxidant and spasmolytic properties, it is believed the doctors.
