Mussels in the Bay of Sevastopol annexed do not breed because of the too warm sea. Such opinion on air of Radio Crimea.The realities expressed on August 15, doctor of biological Sciences, fellow of the Ukrainian Institute of biology of southern seas named Kovalevsky national Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Nina shurova, which carried out special studies on this issue.
“Mainly on mussels was affected by high temperature in the Crimea. At a temperature of +20 degrees in the sea, these organisms are no longer to filter the water and die. The water becomes more turbid, the sun’s rays do not penetrate into the deep, and not nourish algae which produce oxygen. So mussels is not only food for fish, and also natural cleaners of the sea”, – said the expert.
In the annexed Sevastopol in 2017 gourmet sea mussels gave a record low number of young offspring. On the rocks in the sea and on substrata of mussel farms are practically no young attached mussels.
August 12, Crimean media reported that in the Bay of Sevastopol for the first time in a long time ceased to breed mussels. A similar situation occurred in 2010, when due to high water temperatures killed adult animals. In recent years in the waters of Sevastopol and the Crimea there is a strong tendency to degradation of natural settlements of mussels. Because of pollution and hypoxia (lack of oxygen in the water) mortality of marine life occurs more often, the researchers note.
