The special representative of the United States proposed to solve the problems in the Donbass without reference to the Crimea.
The white house is not going to associate the settlement in Eastern Ukraine with the status of the Crimea, said the special representative of the US State Department in Ukraine Kurt Volker. However, he assured that neither the United States nor the European Union will not recognize the annexation of Crimea to Russia.
“If we have a chance to make progress on one of the conflict areas – East of Ukraine, we must move forward and not falter through the Crimea. But it doesn’t change our approach to the Crimea”, – he said and added that the US is not going to recognize the Russian Crimea.
Walker also explained that the West is ready to soften the imposed sanctions against Russia, depending on progress in the Donbass. If the Minsk agreement will be “fully implementanon, there will be an easing of sanctions corresponding to this” promised Walker.
The special representative also told me that his new meeting with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov will take place on 13 November 2017 in Belgrade. It will discuss the initiative on the introduction of peacekeepers in Donbass.
Earlier, Walker said that since the forces of the DNI and LC “is fully controlled by Russia” in Washington we are going to “negotiate only with her.” October 31 Volker said the DNI and the LC should not participate in the negotiations on the introduction of peacekeepers, as the Minsk agreement, he said, were made “between Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE”.
