Poroshenko has approved the introduction of Ukrainian-language quotas on TV

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed the Law “On amendments to some laws of Ukraine concerning the language of audiovisual (electronic) mass media” (No. 5313), which provides for increasing the share of Ukrainian language in the broadcast of Ukrainian TV channels.

Relevant information is contained in the bill on the Parliament website.

It is noted that the law is returned with a signature from the President today, 9 June.

The law, in particular, provides that the total weekly volume of radio and TV broadcasting national and regional categories, which in accordance with the licenses to carry out essential and/or multi-channel (digital) broadcasting using the radio frequency resource, transmission, and/or movies in the state language should be not less than 75% of the total duration of the transmission and/or films (or parts of them) in each time period between 07:00 and 18:00 and between 18:00 and 22:00.

According to the law, in General, weekly volume of radio and TV broadcasting the local category of broadcasting that in accordance with the licenses carry out essential and/or multi-channel (digital) broadcasting using the radio frequency resource, transmission, and/or movies made in the state language should be not less than 60% of the total duration of the transmission and/or films (or parts of them) in each time period between 07:00 and 18:00 and between 18:00 and 22:00.

The law stipulates that the broadcaster broadcast movies and/or transfers that are not their own product exclusively in the state language, with the exception of films and programs (except children’s and animation), created before 1 August 1991.

According to the law, the movies and/or transmission stream which allowed for a non-state language according to this law, subtitrata in the state language.

The films, created on the territory of the republics of the former USSR in Russian and Ukrainian language and later dubbed in Russian, sounded or duplicated in the Ukrainian language.
