Paleontologists have found the oldest mushroom in the world.
In the North-West of Brazil, scientists have found mineralizatsiya mushroom age of 115 million years.
On the finding they reported in the journal PLOS ONE.
Small, about the size 5×6 cm, the fungus has received the name Gondwanagaricites magnificus – the name of the ancient supercontinent in the southern hemisphere, where it probably grew, and from the Greek agarikon – “mushroom”.
Using electron microscopy, paleontologists have determined that the fungus belongs to plate the mushrooms on the bottom of the cap which are plates that distribute the spores.
As the researchers explain, the mushroom fell into the water, the current swept him to the salt lagoon, and there he sank to the bottom. At the bottom of the mushroom was covered with fine sediments, and over time, it generalizirovanny, its fabric was replaced by pyrite, which then turned into goethite.
Before that, scientists were already ancient mushrooms, but they were all trapped in amber. Mineralized mushroom they found for the first time.
