We need to build a program of reforms, – said the President.
Ukraine will soon apply for membership in NATO. This was stated by President Petro Poroshenko at the opening session of the Commission Ukraine-NATO.
“Our priority is integration into the Euro-Atlantic space of security, with the aim of gaining membership in the North Atlantic Treaty organization. It is very important that the decision of NATO and the 29 member countries. No country outside NATO has a veto or the right permissions for this cooperation. It is the will of 29 countries and the will of the country – a future member. I want to stress again, this does not mean that we will immediately file the application, the application for membership, absolutely no, this means that we need to build a reform program, the program of our cooperation, to strengthen the niche of the effort to achieve the required standards,” the President said.
Poroshenko called the visit to Kiev of the North Atlantic Council headed by the Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg symbolic.
“This is your visit today along the North Atlantic Council is also deeply symbolic, and not just because this happens on the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Charter on a distinctive partnership between Ukraine and NATO in Madrid which was signed by the President of Ukraine, the NATO Secretary General and 16, and now 29 of heads of state and government of NATO. Yet it is symbolic because in a few days in Ukraine there are representatives of all key countries and institutions that are responsible for the security of the entire democratic world,” – said the head of state.
