Moscow is using the chance to convince the West that Ukraine is actually opposed to the Minsk agreements.
Putin agreed in a telephone conversation in the format “Norman Quartet” because Russia today is very interested in the fact that to accuse Ukraine of violating the Minsk agreements. For Russia, another important factor is the sudden activation of the foreign policy vector of the United States. This encouraged the Kremlin to preserve the Minsk group format.
This opinion of the site “24” stated the Center’s Director of public relations Eugene Magda.
“Moscow is using the chance to convince the West that Ukraine is actually opposed to the Minsk agreements. Especially after the NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov in an interview said that Ukraine will return to their territory, and “the challenge meter by meter, mile by mile,… to move to the East. The main thing – not to rush the border,” – said the expert.
According to Magda, Ukraine, for their part, can afford this kind of talk. Because otherwise the question arises: is neither Ukraine on peaceful settlement in the Donbass?
At the same time, according to Eugene Magda, Ukraine is in some sense hostage to the Minsk agreements. All the participants in a recent telephone conversation German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin – know that the Minsk agreement to date, cannot be performed. The reason – the signatories of these transactions interpret their essence in different ways and may not be.
In the political sense, nor France, nor Germany is not beneficial to the Minsk agreement is dead in the last days of the presidency, Francois Hollande, and on the eve of parliamentary elections in Germany. So Berlin and Paris will continue to support the Minsk agreement in this state as it is now. But the Minsk agreement can be compared to a terminally ill person who is in a coma, and it is clear that recovery will not be, – emphasizes the analyst.
Therefore, says Magda, will not change. In addition, as the expert noted, the Minsk agreement will likely be negotiated during the scheduled visit of Angela Merkel to Moscow, but not the key issue.
“For Russia today, the key theme is the search for options how to find a common language with the EU on the background of the burgeoning of Donald trump. Russia will attempt to play on contradictions between the USA and the EU. Although not the fact that this game will be successful,” said Eugene Magda.
In this game, the political scientist, the Kremlin will be hard to use Ukraine, but we must stress that our government, regardless of the results of any telephone conversations, should make a real effort to strengthen their positions. Otherwise, underlines Magda, we will become not a subject but an object of foreign policy that a state with such dimensions and capacity, as Ukraine has no right to afford.
