Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of sport and the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin to support the idea to organize in Moscow the festive events devoted to the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Olympic games. It is reported by Interfax.
The idea to celebrate in July 2020 anniversary of the Olympic games was offered an honorary President of the Olympic Committee of Russia (OKR) Vitaly Smirnov.
“In July of 2020 will celebrate 40 years of summer Olympic games of 1980 in Moscow. Despite the boycott of the United States, the game was a huge success <…> Many sports facilities previous Olympiads were in disrepair, so the celebration of the anniversary Games in 1980, which will be supported by the International Olympic Committee, shows with what attention and care are supported and rekonstruiruet sports facilities of the Olympic games. It will be a success and show how in Russia relate to the sport”, — said Smirnov at a meeting of the Council for physical culture and sport under the President.
Summer Olympics in 1980 held in Moscow from 19 July to 3 August. More than 50 countries boycotted the Olympics in conjunction with the introduction in 1979 of Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
The USSR team won first place in the team standings, having won 80 gold, 69 silver and 46 bronze medals. The three teams entered the GDR (47, 37, 42) and Bulgaria (8, 16, 17).
