Poroshenko signed a law banning St. George ribbons

The law “On amendments to the Code of Ukraine on administrative offences regarding the prohibition of production and promotion of St. George (guards) ribbon” No. 2031-VIII was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 16 may 2017.

“The law banning ribbons I will sign as soon as it will come to me from Parliament. Why? Because it is not the symbolism of the Second world war, this symbolism – a symbol of aggression against Ukraine 2014-2017. Because hung these ribbons militants kill our soldiers every day and night,” – said Poroshenko.

He also added that “Russia’s policy towards Ukraine, she put the tape outside the law.”

This law supplements the Code of administrative offences with a new article establishing liability for the production and promotion of St. George ribbons. Thus, public use, display or wearing a St. George ribbon, or her image shall entail imposing a fine from 50 to 150 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens with confiscation of the St. George ribbon or items containing the images.

The same actions made repeatedly within year after imposing of adminusername, as well as the manufacture or distribution of St. George ribbons shall be punished with a fine from 150 to 300 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens or administrative arrest up to 15 days with confiscation of the St. George ribbon or items containing the images.

The law shall enter into force on the day following the day of its publication.

Recall, may 16, Parliament voted to ban St. George ribbon, but the next day, the deputies from the faction “opposition bloc” has made a draft resolution on the abolition of the voting results. Under the rules, as Parliament will not consider the law to send to the President for signature not. On 25 may, the Parliament unblocked the signing of this law.
