President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed “On amendments to the criminal procedure code of Ukraine (concerning improvement of the mechanisms ensuring the tasks of criminal proceedings)”.
According to information on the website of the Parliament, the law returned with the President’s signature today, April 11.
As reported, on March 16, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On amendments to the criminal procedure code of Ukraine (concerning improvement of the mechanisms ensuring the tasks of criminal proceedings)”. The Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko stated that the entry into force of this law will begin trials for the examination of 190 criminal proceedings in absentia, including the case against ex-President Viktor Yanukovych and 23 Russian generals.
The law corrected the existing shortcomings of the criminal process in the opening materials of the pretrial investigation by the parties of criminal proceedings and the implementation of the special pre-trial investigation and special judicial proceedings, as well as improved provisions regarding detention and the conduct of pre-trial investigation and of the grounds and procedure of their extension, making it impossible to escape from the perpetrators of grave and especially grave crimes.
