Ukrainian scientists have developed a new method of treatment of spinal cord injuries.
Ukrainian experts have proposed a promising method for the treatment of spinal cord injuries, which was the winner of the Science-Society-Personality-2017.
According to the author of the project Oksana Onishchenko, the idea of scientists entitled “Development of innovative neuroengineering method of restoration treatment of consequences of spinal cord injury” was declared the winner of the competition of scientific and technical developments of young scientists Science-Society-Personality-2017.
Onishchenko said that the method proposed by the Ukrainian scientific community, helps to recover the spinal cord function even with considerable damage. So, the damaged area of the spinal cord can be restored by means of neural engineering tissue, replacing damaged tissue in a natural synthetic environment (called matrix).
It is reported that synthetic materials are now widely used in the world medical practice for the treatment of spinal cord injury, however, significant damage to the effectiveness of their use remains low.
“The Ukrainian researchers have proposed to use the matrix as the soil “to sow” in its absence stem cells in order to grow, develop and give “the harvest” – differentiate into the neurons of the spinal cord, thereby restoring its function,” the article says.
The author of the project Oksana Rybachuk indicates that the research of the Ukrainian research team is of great importance.
“This is several steps in the study of the properties of stem cells. And, perhaps, new word in medicine. Because it allows to predict the possible combinations that will be most effective at different stages of development and spinal cord injuries, this will not cause a serious immune response and are most easily perceived by the body”, she concluded.
