So, today launched the Russian film “blade Runner 2049”. The idea with this picture, in my opinion, was pretty dicey. The original “blade Runner” has long been the subject of a cult with millions of followers worldwide, and the open ending was one of the main features. Innuendo, the possibility of different development pathways — that takes the sequel to the very fact of its existence. A strong blow on the classics, eh?
Fortunately, a new “Running” quickly justify the damage done, not just continuing the story dangling, but forcing us to dramatically rethink it.
After the events described in the first “blade Runner”, was thirty years old. New “running”, the police officer Los Angeles Key reveals the secrets that can plunge society into chaos. Opening Kay forces him to go in search of Rick Deckard, a former blade runner who’s been missing all these years.
The first thing that catches the eyes, the world became more. The original film by Ridley Scott was and still is very beautiful and it has some great urban landscapes. However, the movie in 1982 is very dark and cramped: narrow streets continuous flow of the human river, many kinds of vehicles are parked in traffic, polyphonic speech is heard, it seems, in dozens of languages at once. This swirling soup of peoples and cultures, stuffed to overflowing in a tin pot of the metropolis. And even in the sky there is no freedom — the darkness and the rain heavy cover, under pressure from above, press neon flash boiling of civilization closer to the ground.
In the film Denis Villeneuve is also there, but the Director of the sequel from the very first frame, taking a step back to show us the larger picture. And it turns out that outside of the pan there is death. A scorched wasteland, dead, gray trees, luxurious dump, turned into museums of yore. These landscapes are breathtaking, compressed something inside. And then, of course, need to say thanks to operator Roger Dickinso, a multiple nominee for “Oscar”, including for the joint work with Villeneuve — Thriller “the Killer” and “Captive” and things like “the Shawshank redemption” and “Old men”. In short, the camera in “blade Runner 2049” in the right hands.
There is almost no music, only fragments, instead of the soundtrack space of stunning locations fills the rumble, menacing, hypnotic. The sound is inextricably linked with the picture.
And through all this visual and acoustic splendor of the meditative walks Ryan Gosling. The star of “Drive” and “Only God forgive” again shows the different facets of silence. However, here he’s much chattier than Refn’s, but most of the experience remains hidden, clenched inside of a character, and you will feel this pressure, until the patience of the hero is not over.
His name is K. he is blade Runner. Perhaps the best in the business, the same as was Rick Descartes in his time. Kay suffers from the same unspoken questions. Who are you? A real human or a Replicant with implanted memories? And how can you tell?! Only now, these dilemmas from the inside out. Being a Replicant is serenity, confidence in the future. You have no soul, and therefore nothing to worry about. Being human is a constant danger and the need to make a choice. Not so all is unequivocal, right?
But this reimagining of the original from Villeneuve ends. Who are the Replicants in “blade Runner”? This beautiful creature is horrified to realize his own mortality. Not knowing when the end of their time, they suffer from obscurity. In the afterlife there is no hope, it’s for people. Replicants rebel against their creators, demanding to reveal the secret of life meted out to them, and better yet, of immortality. However, they can easily go to murder, morality and biblical commandments do not limit them. They are like people without faith, without God. For a man with traditional attitudes Replicants — just pieces of meat, living, thinking, but devoid of soul, and therefore frightening. They are copies of people, are not distinguishable in appearance from the source. And it is also scary, because man, according to biblical myth created in the image and likeness, was also just a copy of someone else, and came out far from perfect. The fear provoked violence and led to the events described in the anime short film Black Out In 2022 , Sinitiro Watanabe. A nuclear explosion does not destroy the data on the Replicants, but also becomes a symbol of a catharsis for them, and it’s not about aggression, but about something really creative. After this explosion, among other things, helped to cover up one little miracle… which you’ll learn from the new film.
But the term “miracle” already suggests that the Replicants entered the territory of the divine. Overcame imposed on them an existential crisis to stand on a par with other creatures of the Lord, and even higher for some. Yes, I’m talking about humanity as if going through the last century of its existence. However, there is in fact a space colony. Talk about them, but do not show, so it is unclear what is the hope of civilization or the cancer spreading to other planets? Anyway, the mad scientist Neander Wallace, the character Jared Leto, also likes to talk about God. He admits that he fancies himself a Demiurge and its Replicants refers to it as Angels. However, this God is cruel, far from omnipotence and is stingy with his love. Latest turns one of his children, Replicants the name of Love, in a jealous psychopath who is willing to kill anyone in the hope of recognition of his father. And if Jared Leto is the Lord, the heroine of Sylvia hooks is the Archangel Michael, designed to go against his own brother in order to protect their common Creator. Get it in the movie? Not really. So the analogy is not complete, and Lucifer the local function is more reminiscent of Prometheus. He gives and sacrifices. And his beautiful victim.
In short, it’s more than “blade Runner”. The world has become more. Ideas became more. Of questions, too. There will not be an open ending, but much still remains secret. Villeneuve explains more than Scott, but mostly just shows. And you with a sinking heart watch. Throughout history, visual images, Marovich futuristic and post — apocalyptic landscapes- addictive to the death.
2 hours 32 minutes, and I want it to last forever.
