The Ukrainians were warned about the deteriorating weather conditions: Monday, December 11, in some areas of the country expected strong gusts of wind, sleet and ice.
“On December 11 in Ukraine wind gusts of 15-20 m/s, in the Carpathians 30-35 m/s, in the Carpathians, the night in Poltava, Chernihiv and Sumy regions of strong sleet, sleet sticking, ice; night and morning on the roads of most areas of sleet,” – said in the message of the State service of Ukraine for emergency situations.
According to the press service of the SSES, 11 December in Kiev and Kiev region expected wind gusts of 15-20 m/s, at night and in the morning the roads icy.
Given the weather conditions, the Directorate of emergency KSCA recommends some tips in case of ice on roads and pedestrian areas of the city.
So, drivers are advised: to adhere to safe speed limits, distance, refuse from risky maneuvers that adverse weather conditions can lead to emergency situations; when approaching pedestrian crossings and location of children’s institutions reduce speed to low; do not forget to turn the Parking lights or fog lights; do not use vehicles with summer tires.
Pedestrians are advised to walk slowly, stepping on the entire sole; don’t keep hands in pockets – this increases the risk not only falling, but severe injuries, especially fractures and concussions of the brain; an imbalance while walking in the ice to try to quickly sit down is the most real chance to stay on his feet; if the fall can not be avoided, it is necessary to strain muscles, to regroup, and by touching the ground, try to roll; to be careful on the sidewalk, the vehicle can enter or the driver may not time to slow down; when crossing the roadway in front of the car to consider what is the stopping distance on slippery road surfaces is increased 4-5 times; to bypass the metal manhole covers – they’re usually covered with ice.
