In Latvia plan to completely abandon the Russian language in schools

From 2020 2021 academic year, General education schools of Latvia will be studied only in the Latvian language. For children of ethnic minorities in their native language will be allowed to teach the native language, literature and related culture and history subjects, – Delfi cites the words of the official.

Also from the next academic year in preschool starting from the age of five, Latvians will begin to teach the new standards. They, according to the plans of the Ministry of education should “ensure that Latvian language proficiency is at a level that will enable children of minorities to successfully start teaching in elementary school in Latvian”.

According to Sadurskis, these steps will improve the cohesion and integration of the Latvian society. For cohesion, in turn, “to live in a single information space”, – said the politician, adding that currently 22% of pupils of schools of national minorities speak Latvian at all or at a basic level, or bad, or don’t know at all.
