The basic ingredients of pancakes rose.
Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, which is celebrated from 20 to 26 February, will cost the Ukrainians 20% higher than a year ago.
Journalists estimated the cost of the “pancake set” for a family of four (50 pieces).
According to calculations of the Ukrainian agrarian Confederation, 50 pancakes without any toppings will cost the owner in 67 UAH. And it is almost 20% higher than a year ago. In 2016 the same number of pancakes for a family of four “pulled” to 57 C. The price increase is explained by rising prices for almost all major products included in the classic recipe.
“During the year the cost of cooking a plate of pancakes increased by 17.9%, or from 57 to 67 UAH UAH. In particular, the greatest influence on the offset price pancakes in the direction of growth had dairy products, because milk 2,5% fat went up by 32.5% and butter 73% fat — 36.5%. Now these two ingredients account for more than 64.5 percent of the waste that will have to take on holiday cooking. A year ago the cost of a load of pancakes dairy ingredients were 56.9%,” — explained to journalists the analyst of the Ukrainian agrarian Confederation Dmitry Dane.
According to him, dairy products rose significantly for several reasons — the difficult situation in livestock, decrease in livestock, the growth of prices for milk and dairy products on world markets.
Increased in price and other ingredients that are included with classic pancakes, but their appreciation was not as impressive, as is the case with dairy products.
“For example, during the year, more moderate growth demonstrated flour — by 3.8%, sugar — by 3.2%,” — says the Dane.
While the rapid growth of the cost of the pancakes slightly eased the decline in prices for eggs — over-year prices have decreased by 6.3%. “Given the fact that the structure of the pancake cooking key dishes eggs take almost 25% of the costs, the decline in the cost of a dozen eggs by 6.3% can be considered as an important indicator. But, unfortunately, this was not enough for the cost of the pancakes to compensate for the rising prices of milk,” explains the Dane.
It is worth noting that, in addition to eggs, more accessible for the Ukrainians was the salt which, in comparison to last season, became cheaper by 9.7%. But it doesn’t actually affect the final cost to pancakes.
Many Ukrainians are used to eating pancakes. However, any of these supplements would be a serious waste of the family budget, because the annual jar of jam, for example, 250 ml rose by 32%, or UAH 7, the result is now a delicacy is 22 UAH. Package of sour cream 15% fat 500 g also rose over the year by 34.1% or UAH 5. Today the cream can be purchased for 21 UAH.
But for lovers of delicacies pancakes will be altogether expensive dish. A jar of red caviar will cost now in average 120 UAH, for the year it has increased in price by 17%, or 20 UAH.
In the end, 50 pancakes for a family of 4 persons with strawberry jam or sour cream will cost the Ukrainians about the same — within 89-88 UAH respectively. But with red caviar — in 307 UAH.
Want to save money, experts advise to abandon the toppings or to substitute milk, butter and eggs for cheaper alternatives.
