The operation is carried out against ISIS.
Pakistan on Sunday, 16 July 2017, announced the beginning of a new military operation against the “Islamic state” (IG) near the border with Afghanistan. As reported to major General Asif ghafoor, infantry division, supported by aircraft and artillery, marching in a semi-Autonomous Agency (the region of) khaybar in the North.
According to him, Pakistan appealed to Afghan authorities with a request to conduct a similar operation on their side of the border in Nangarhar province which is a stronghold for ISIS.
While ghafoor said that the IG has a strong network in Pakistan, however, said the military, the Islamists are strengthening their position in Afghanistan, although IG there is still not as powerful as in the middle East.
Another aim of the operation is to stop the uncontrolled movement of people across the border between Nangarhar and Khyber. Pakistan and Afghanistan have long traded accusations of insufficient efforts in the fight against Islamists in the border regions.
