Such a move would be catastrophic for Putin.
The Kremlin will not agree to the proposal to “surrender” the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in exchange for improved relations with the United States, as this could have “serious consequences” personally to President Putin.
This opinion was expressed by Russian journalist Igor Yakovenko.
“Hope for what will come Tillerson and Putin will offer a choice between Assad and the United States, and Putin will hand over al-Assad – seem to me utopian,” said he.
“I think for Putin, it is impossible option, at least explicitly, in the public space. For him this is unacceptable for a number of reasons. First of all, because the war party in Russia is strong enough – and in the Russian establishment, and the media, which today largely are the “tail that wags the dog”. Among other things, is a loss of face, which can lead to quite serious consequences for Putin,” – said Yakovenko.
According to him, “it is obvious that in its foreign policy, Putin relies on rogue on Iran, on Hezbollah, on the same Assad, for various terrorist groups. They’ll just take it as a betrayal.”
In this context, the journalist recalled that “the fate of those who behave decently in foreign policy, Russia is pretty sad” – for example, Mikhail Gorbachev, “which is normally build relationships with the West,” as well as Boris Yeltsin, “which fell curse.”
