The battle for the city was conducted from 17 Oct 2016.
The Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi congratulated the Iraqi troops with the release of the second largest Iraqi city of Mosul from the militants groups “Islamic state”.
“Commander of the armed forces, Haider al-Abadi arrived in the liberated city of Mosul and congratulated the heroic Iraqi fighters and people of great victory”, – reads the statement of the official representative of the Prime Minister.
The battle for the city was conducted from 17 Oct 2016. The is militants captured Mosul in June 2014. Then the jihadists took control of more territory in Iraq and Syria, which had declared so-called Caliphate. But in the last ten months, ISIS was forced to retreat under pressure from Iraqi government troops.
The fighting also involved fighters of the Kurdish Peshmerga, Shiite militias and Sunni Arab groups. The attack was supported by aircraft and military advisers of the international coalition led by the United States.
Until the last moment, the militants offered stubborn resistance of the Iraqi troops suffered serious losses in the attack on the city. During the capture of Mosul killed large numbers of civilians.
