A mistake made by an official in a public speech that led to the scandal.
The Minister of housing and urban development USA Ben Carson compared the slaves and immigrants.
A black politician spoke to the staff of his Department with a 40-minute speech on the theme “America — the land of dreams and opportunities.” He noted that immigrants from other countries, whose pictures are presented at the immigration Museum on Ellis island, worked many hours six or seven days a week and for a small fee, and before them did the same, slaves.
“There were other immigrants who came here in slave ships, they worked longer and did more hard work for less money. But they also had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, great-grandsons and great-granddaughters can live in prosperity and happiness on this earth,” said Carson.
This comparison caused outrage among users of the network, the newspaper said. In particular, the American actress Whoopi Goldberg wrote on his Twitter page that “most immigrants came voluntarily, what can be said about slaves — they were stolen.”
Later on Twitter Carson clarified his position on this issue. He said, “slaves do not just give up and die,” and “immigrant is a person coming to live permanently in a foreign country”.
According to CNN, this is not the first time Carson draws Parallels to slavery. So, in 2013, he said that health care reform Obamacare, initiated by who at the moment US President Barack Obama, is the worst thing that ever happened to the country since slavery. Political commentator of the channel Case Boykin (Keith Boykin) in this regard suggested that the Minister “may not understand the meaning of the word “slavery”.
