American astronomers calculated that two satellites of Uranus, Cressida and Desdemona, will face each other.
However, the collision will happen in about a million years.
An employee of the University of Idaho Robert Kenia studied Cressida, and concluded that its mass will be one of the causes of death of the satellite. Cressida is much denser than the small satellites of Saturn and consists mostly of carbonaceous matter. Knowing the mass of the satellite, Kenia have modeled its trajectory, and came to the conclusion that Cressida and Desdemona sooner or later they will face.
The collision must happen in a million years. At present their orbits are separated from each other by only 900 miles. At the end of last century astronomers first speculated about a possible collision, but then it was about the time interval in tens of millions of years.
Scientists believe that this collision of satellites of Uranus have occurred in the past. It is noted that two diffuse rings near the moons of Uranus may have formed from debris from previous collisions of celestial bodies.
