Division of the Autonomous vehicle of the British company Westfield, manufacturer of sports cars, announced its plans to develop Britain’s first unmanned electric cars for street cleaning.
The company, which participated in creating the Shuttle to the 5th terminal at Heathrow airport and in the testing of drones on the roads South-East London in April this year, will join forces with the manufacturer of street sweepers Johnston Sweepers and an expert on computer vision, Fusion Processing Ltd to develop a completely new car.
According to Julian Turner, Westfield Chapter, the main goal of the project is to develop technology that could be used for detection and removal of foreign objects and debris from runways and aprons, as well as to improve the efficiency of street cleaning.
Plans to completely replace the fleet of large-size and heavy-duty diesel vehicles smaller and lighter devices that will be placed in strategic locations and regularly carry out the cleaning of allocated areas. “Instead of being idle 80% of the time they are occupied at 90%,” — said the head of Westfield. He hoped that the prototype will be ready by the beginning of 2018, and testing will take place in the Heathrow and Birmingham.
