The project will cost several billion dollars.
The first step specialists will be the sequencing (determining the sequence of nucleotides of DNA) of the genomes of all currently existing eukaryotes. This group of organisms includes both single-celled (protists) and multicellular organisms (fungi, plants, animals).
According to preliminary estimates, the project will cost several billion dollars, which is comparable to decoding the human genome, which cost $ 4.8 billion.
Scientists emphasize that it is necessary to develop new standards for DNA isolation from the environment and organisms, as well as to ensure high accuracy of its decoding. This will allow to obtain high-quality data needed to determine the evolutionary relationships between different groups of organisms.
