In Scotland learned how to produce hydrogen from tidal power

В Шотландии научились получать водород из приливной энергииUnusual achievement can boast of local scientists.

Scottish research Institute for marine energy (EMEC) is the world’s first hydrogen produced using tidal energy. Located off the coast of the Orkney Islands, the station is going to use hydrogen fuel as an alternative fuel for ferries.

With the help of a prototype tidal energy converters the electrolyser ITM Power is able to separate water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen. The device produces 220 kg of hydrogen every 24 hours, it can store up to 500 kg.

The original purpose of the acquisition apparatus for electrolysis was the solution to the problem of storing energy on Orkney, EMEC but now going to explore the possibility of developing a hydrogen economy in the region. According to the Director of the centre Neil Kermode, clean hydrogen fuel can, with time, replace fuel for local cars, trucks and ferries.

The main consumer of hydrogen fuel will be the project Surf N Turf, which is going to use two sources of renewable energy: wind turbines on the coast of the island Edey and EMEC tidal station at 500 kW, splitting the water. Hydrogen stored as a compressed gas, and then transported by land to the port of Kirkwall, capital of Orkney Islands. There they run ferries that transported peat, reports The Engineer.
