Near the French town of Uzes in the South of France, archaeologists found the fragments of the 2,000 year-old city.
Archaeologists have discovered in the South of France Roman settlement, which was identified by them as the lost city of Osetia (Ucetia).
As noted by Science Alert, informed about the existence of this city was known only through the records preserved in the nearby settlement, and some artifacts.
At this point the researchers studied an area of about four thousand square meters and have discovered mosaic patterns and structures that are older than two thousand years. “Before we started our work, we knew that there was a Roman city called Ossetia only because his name was first mentioned on the stele in Nimes, along with 11 other settlement names in the region,” says Philip Kane, of the French National Institute for preventive archaeological research.
Excavations at the site of the discovery of the city began in November last year after during the construction of the school under the earth was found ancient buildings. As the researchers note, the city existed in this place from the 1-2 century to the 7th century BC with a break of 3-4 centuries, which scientists can’t explain.
During the excavations of the wall structure as well as the mosaic patterns in the style which, as the scientists, appeared in Roman culture much later. This, according to the researchers, means that the city could be the birthplace of this style.
“This mosaic is very impressive because of its large size, good preservation and motifs that combine classic geometric shapes with pictures of animals. This kind of elaborate mosaic pavement is often found in the Roman world in the 1st and 2nd centuries of our era, but our mosaic was created about 200 years before this, so this is amazing” say the researchers.
