California poppy or California escholzia is the flower symbol of the state of California. It is depicted on all roads entering the state.
This bright orange flower was named in honor of physician-naturalist Johann Friedrich von Assolna (1793-1831), who was a surgeon in the Russian expedition ship arrived in 1815 in San Francisco and moored in a Bay surrounded by hills covered with the Golden flower.
