The new processor will have a powerful stuffing.
Not long ago, German overclocker Roman “Der8auer” Hartung found out what’s under the hood of AMD Ryzen Threadripper. It turned out that under the new CPU heat spreader is located just four crystal, two of which are not involved.
According to several “zhelezyachnye” web publications, non-crystals are the so-called “dummies” (dummies), and not full, but empty chips with eight cores. Their use was allegedly due to the need to evenly distribute the pressure exerted on the substrate. Like it or not, Roman decided to find out in the course of the next bold experiment.
This time Der8auer got a retail copy Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and even made a special device such as Diled Die Mate, which managed to simplify the process of scalping.
Then a German enthusiast completely “gutted” referred to the processor by separating the four crystal Zeppelin from the substrate. After polishing the silicon crystals revealed that all of them are full-fledged chips, two of which on one of the stages of production CPU not passed quality control, and has been deactivated. In other words, between EPYC server solutions and processors Ryzen Threadripper much less differences than expected.
According to Roman, the use of four cores Zeppelin may be due to AMD’s plans to release a 32 core model Ryzen Threadripper. However, “red” certainly would significantly reduce the working frequency of the new processors in order to “fit in” 180-watt heating package. For example, the nominal frequency of the server chip EPYC 7601 (32 cores/64 threads) is only 2.2 GHz, and the boost-mode — 3.2 GHz.
