The appeal of Viktor Yanukovych to Russian President Vladimir Putin to use the Armed forces of the Russian Federation to restore “constitutional order” in Ukraine was not only read out by the representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vitaly Churkin at a meeting of the UN security Council, but the Russian side also gave the document an official status.
This was stated by former permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN Yuriy Sergeyev.
“Yanukovych’s appeal was not simply read and displayed. The morning of the same day the Russian Federation has given it the status of official document of the UN security Council, such a formula exists,” – said Sergeyev during testimony in the Obolon district court of Kyiv on the case of treason Yanukovych, where he appeared as a witness.
The diplomat noted that the letter from Yanukovich to Putin has been distributed to members of the UN security Council and they reviewed it.
Sergeyev said that, answering a question of journalists on this appeal, the then representative of France to the UN Gerard Araud said that “the document is not fake – fake President.”
We will remind, at a meeting of the UN security Council on 3 March 2014, the Russian representative Vitaly Churkin showed a copy of the letter from Yanukovich to Putin asking to send troops to Ukraine. Sergeev represented Ukraine at the meeting.
Yanukovych is accused that on March 1, 2014, staying on the territory of the Russian Federation, he committed treason by submitting a written statement to the President of the Russian Federation with a request to use Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine. This subsequently led to the loss of the Crimea and Ukraine of objects of state property amounting to more than 1,080 trillion hryvnia.
The former President is accused of treason (part 1 of article 111 of the criminal code), aiding separatism (part 5, article 27, part 3 of article 110 of the criminal code) and aiding in waging aggressive war (part 5, article 27, part 2 of article 437 of the criminal code).
