In Antarctica melted a huge array of ice

In Antarctica, the melting ice shelf.

Scientists have documented large-scale melting of ice in West Antarctica, they fear that this may be a harbinger of major changes in the continent.

The total area affected by the ice melting part of the Ross ice shelf is 777.000 square kilometers, which is larger than the area of Texas.

Scientists from the SCRIPPS Oceanographic Institute of the University of California in San Diego reported that in case of further melting of these glaciers, the sea level could rise by three meters.

“The study shows us a possible version of the future. Basically it is believed that glaciers are shrinking due to warm water, which washes out the lower part of glaciers. This makes the glaciers potentially much more unstable,” said David Bromwich, Antarctic expert at Ohio state University and one of the authors of the study.

According to the researchers, such a large-scale melting of ice is due to warm moist air, and extensive cloud layer that El niño had passed over the ice shield. Scientists noticed traces of melting, the greater part of the Ross ice shelf.
