Located in Steiermark (Styria), Austria, lake grüner see or Green lake (Grüner See) is a unique Park that each summer turns into a lake.
Although this phenomenon looks incredibly surreal, in fact it is quite easily explained.
The Park is located in the valley and surrounded by snow-capped mountains. When the temperature begins to rise, snow and ice melt, forming a huge amount of water flowing down the slopes. In the lowlands the water is collected, forming a small lake during the summer months.
The water depth in the lake is 12 feet (3.66 m), but for divers and underwater photographers this is enough to explore the underwater world and take beautiful photos.
The lake water is cold even in the summer months (4-7 degrees Celsius), but transparent. She has beautiful emerald green color, this is how the lake got its name (translated from the German “Grüner See” means “Green lake”).
Those who are not afraid of cold water, the underwater view is breathtaking. We offer you to take a virtual underwater walk around Green lake:
