A study conducted by researchers from the University of reading, showed that the use of such foodstuff as chocolate (cocoa) helps to reduce inflammation in the intestine.

Experts have discovered that chocolate has a special effect on the intestinal microflora.

Researchers conducted an experiment in which volunteers for four weeks drank milk with a high concentration of cocoa. During this time, their gut increased bacteria levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which belong to friendly to humans.

According to doctors, the bacteria Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are involved in the activation of inflammatory processes in the intestine, thereby maintaining its healthy condition. It is symptomatic that the earlier studies on pigs also have documented increases in levels of the bacteria Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the intestine after the animals were transferred to a diet with a high content of cocoa.

Also at this time, scientists had concluded that the components of the cocoa help to reduce the number of bacteria, Clostridium histolyticum, whose high content is an indication of inflammatory bowel disease.

“Chocolate can stimulate the development of the desired bacteria and reduce inflammation in the intestine”, – concluded the study authors.

Separately, the experts noted that beneficial gut cocoa is not synonymous with chocolate. As explained by the experts in chocolate bars often contain large amounts of sugar and fat, so preference should be given chocolate with the highest cacao level.
