The UN Secretary-General said about human rights violations in Crimea

We are talking about documented new violations by Russia of international humanitarian law.

UN Secretary-General, antónio Guterres, released a report, which reported on human rights abuses in annexed Crimea. About it on Wednesday, June 24, UKRINFORM reports with reference to the permanent representative of Ukraine Serhiy Kislitsa.

“The report of the UN Secretary General Autonomous Republic of Crimea and city of Sevastopol clearly identified as temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation the territory of Ukraine. In addition, it is noted that Russia continues to use the occupied territories of its criminal legislation. Such actions are a violation by the occupant of international humanitarian law,” said Sorrel.

According to the Ukrainian diplomat, UN Secretary-General pointed out that the Russian authorities continue to block access to the Office of the UN high Commissioner for human rights on the Peninsula for monitoring.

Sorrel said that the report of the General Secretary pointed out specific violations of the rights of defendants and the absence of impartial public trial in the annexed Crimean Peninsula. So, the detainees do not provide adequate protection and are not allowed to meet with the Ukrainian Consul.

Separately Guterres said about torture and the forced relocation of defendants and convicts of the Crimean people in neighboring Russia and to the continuing practice of searches and raids, primarily the Crimean Tatars, as well as on violations of freedom of Assembly, freedom of speech, religious rights and ban the activities of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars.

“We are grateful to the Secretary-General and other UN agencies for regular monitoring of violations by Russia of human rights and international humanitarian law on the Crimean Peninsula. It is important that this speaks not only for Ukraine and its partners, but to extend the official documents of the United Nations with a clear display of the consequences of the Russian occupation,” – said the permanent representative of Ukraine.

Oxalis expressed hope that the current report will be the “auxiliary tool” international pressure on Russia to de-occupation of the Crimea and bringing it to international legal responsibility.

Earlier it was reported that the Council of the European Union approved the extension for another year the sanctions against the Russian Federation imposed after the annexation of Crimea.

We will remind, on Wednesday, June 10, the decision to extend for one year the Crimean sanctions against the Russian Federation adopted by the Committee of ambassadors of the countries-EU members.
