The fossil animal was discovered in North America in the rocks, the formation of which was completed in the Triassic period (251-199 million years ago). Previously discovered fossils of horseshoe crabs that lived in the Mesozoic era, Dating back only to the Cretaceous period (145-66 million years ago). However, there are other, more ancient specimens, whose age is 470 million years.
The length of the horseshoe crab is equal to 10 centimeters. According to paleontologists, fancy body shape indicates that the animal belongs to an extinct family Austrolimulidae. Perhaps anatomical features appeared due to the change of the habitat of horseshoe crabs that have moved from sea water to freshwater.
