In Greece accidentally discovered precious artifacts

During the construction of the metro in Thessaloniki found gold wreaths, coins and amphorae.

The Ministry of culture and sports of Greece has established a working group for control over archaeological finds, discovered in the subway construction in Thessaloniki.

This is stated in a statement.

“Archaeological work in the quarries, the metro of Thessaloniki decided to continue after lengthy negotiations between the Ministry of culture and sports and the Ministry of transport of Greece – said in a statement. – Also decided to more carefully monitor these works.”

Specially for this purpose by the Ministry of culture and sports established a working group consisting of officials of the Ministry of culture and the leading archaeologists of Thessaloniki.

In the lobbies of the future subway stations, where they found antiquities, it was decided to arrange the exhibition halls, which will allow passengers to see the ancient city of the Byzantine era. Other finds will be on display in the free areas of the city, near the places of their discovery. This, according to experts, should contribute to the transformation of the “North of the Greek capital” into a kind of Museum under the open sky.

“This work is one of the most important and large-scale operations modernization of the city and preservation of its cultural heritage”, – noted in the Ministry.

During the construction of the metro in Thessaloniki, archaeologists have found many ancient tombs, including the frescoed tomb of the IV century BC At the Northern entrance to the station “Sintrivani” was discovered 83 graves from the Eastern cemetery of ancient Thessaloniki is the grave of a different type, which belong to the Hellenistic and Roman period of Greek history, with about half of them were discovered funerary gifts.

The most sensational finds in the construction of the Thessaloniki metro was made in 2008-2009. While on-site stations “Sintrivani” and “New railway station” archeological lucky to find the whole treasure: eight gold wreaths in the early Hellenistic period (IV – I century BC) and dozens of original gold jewelry as well as coins, rings, copper and earthenware vessels. A total of found more than four thousand ancient objects.

The construction of the metro in Thessaloniki was re-launched in 2006. It is planned that in 2020, the 18 movement of the automated underground trains without drivers will be on one line with a length of 9.6 km, which will be located 13 stations.
