“I shoot people because you love them. Rare and commonplace, you know. And I am glad to say it differently, but there are no other words, this is the most loyal, anyway, writes in his book “Photo stories from the ’80s” one of the best photographers of the late USSR Vladimir Rolls.
“Every single one of the characters in this book — the Golden Fund of the Russian nation, although most of them are without titles, and generally not known to anyone. Here they are the real Russian people, in whom were concentrated those human qualities that Europe never dreamed of; and there are people, believe me, very good”.
Rolls was born in 1953 in the Ural mountains. Initially worked as a photojournalist in the local press, and in 1985 moved to Moscow, becoming head of the illustration Department of a major newspaper “Soviet Russia”. In this position, he experienced all the hardships and privations of the life of the journalist: “Your existence as a person is not accepted in principle. Sick or in love, the family breaks up or has no money for life — a newspaper is not interested. Is the current number. The principle is simple do — or-die”.
In 1990, Rolls left, so to speak, on courses of improvement of qualification in Germany. Yes so there and remained. Began to be published in prominent European publications, has won a prestigious photo contest, and then undertook and for writing.
