Augmented reality glasses Microsoft HoloLens will become assistant surgeons

Spanish hospital Gregorio Marañón in conjunction with the company Exovite develop an innovative project that allows the use of mixed reality in virtual surgery using glasses Microsoft HoloLens.

The project was named HoloSurg and it is designed to help surgeons find and remove the malignant tumor in the muscles.

Why HoloLens

In contrast to conventional VR platforms, where the real world is completely replaced by a picture, a product from Microsoft uses the concept of “holographic computing”. This means that the physical tangible world around will not overlap the picture, and ennobled more reality.

How it works

Before you lie on the operating table, the patient undergoes a full range of examination: a medical examination, to imaging and x-rays. All collected information is formed into the detailed virtual medical records. Wearing a helmet, the surgeon has full access to the medical data of the patient and his current health indicators.

HoloSurg system consists of a set of virtual interactive dashboards that are projected into the field of vision of the surgeon and allows you to view both real and virtual objects. Thanks to the 2D and 3D images you can view, zoom, and rotate in real-time, doctors will be able to reduce physical interference and more accurately determine the location of tumors in patients.

The system fully scans the room with all its objects and allows you to display holographic information with other users both locally and remotely. That is, doctors can examine the patient, collectively, being in different parts of the world. Also the doctor can place the image in the most convenient place, including directly on the patient.

Prospects

A couple of years ago, a similar system could be imagined only in science fiction films, and now projects such as HoloSurg increasingly comes on the heels of reality. Further, the mixed reality will allow surgeons to quickly access the virtual information without losing touch with the real world. In addition to the convenience this system will allow to reduce surgical risks and significantly speed up the process of operation. Well, as long as the surgeon inspects the heart, the patient may, for example, twist in the air a virtual liver and count the holes.
