Only in the UK presumably 25% of the population suffer from metabolic syndrome which leads to obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood sugar. Mediterranean diet of vegetables, fruit and fish plus daily consumption of mixed nuts significantly improve the condition, scientists say.
Scientists conducted the study, which was attended by 1,200 people with metabolic syndrome. Participants were divided into three groups: the first received only advice about eating low-fat food, the second received a quarterly lecture on the Mediterranean diet, which includes plenty of vegetables and fruits, grains, and decrease intake of dairy products and red meat. Each member of the second group also received a liter of olive oil. In the third group were all the same as the second, but in addition to all of the participants were given 300 grams of mixed nuts daily.
A year later, the experts summed up the results of the study. It was found that the group low-fat diet approximately 2% of people got rid of the metabolic syndrome, in the second group, at 6.7% and in the group that consumed nuts, this percentage was 13.7. In people who consumed nuts a year, also decreased cholesterol and stabilized blood pressure. This Association is very pleased researchers, as metabolic disorders often lead to cardiovascular disease, which in turn increases the risk of early death.
