The main topics of the EU summit will be migration, defence and Brexit

Europe intends to determine the policy in relation to “aggressive third countries”.

The problem of migration, the construction of a European defence component within the EU, Brexit, acute issues on the international agenda, and the transition to a digital economy will be the main topics of the meeting of the European Council – EU summit.

According to the official program of the summit, it will begin on October 19 in the afternoon with the traditional heads of States and governments of 28 countries-members of the Union with the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani.

Then EU leaders will discuss the external aspects of migration issues, focusing on Africa, the developments around North Korea and Iran’s nuclear programme, the EU’s relations with Turkey.

On Friday, they will focus on refining the agenda of the European Council in the coming months, plans of cooperation of the EU in the field of defense, will discuss the progress of negotiations with Britain about its exit from the Union.

The Brexit negotiations between Brussels and London will be on Thursday evening, an exchange of views with the Prime Minister of great Britain Teresa may, and on Friday the leaders of the remaining 27 EU countries will meet separately to discuss their progress in the circle.

“We must preserve the unity that we have managed to build over the past year, wrote the President of the European Council Donald Tusk in a letter of invitation to the heads of States and governments of EU countries.

According to him, the EU needs this unity to “overcome the immigration crisis, to mitigate the unfair aspects of globalization, define a policy against aggressive third countries, to limit the damage from Brexit, and save in these difficult times, the rules-based international order”.

Tusk did not mention referred to his “aggressive third countries”, but observers in Brussels do not exclude that in this part may be affected and the EU’s relations with Russia. A separate item on the agenda, they do not appear.
