Scientists have recorded a far greater number of positrons, i.e. of particle of antimatter orbiting Earth than was previously thought.
Earlier versions assumed that the antimatter is generated closest to us pulsars, but recent studies have shown that it is not so.
In 2008, the PAMELA probe, which is orbiting the Earth, found that positrons in orbit more than “should be” on the basis of existing theories about the origin of antimatter.
Now a large international group of scientists has analyzed the recent measurement obtained from the Observatory of the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) in Mexico to test the hypothesis that such particles produce pulsars, i.e. neutron stars.
But the results of the measurements, the flux of high-energy positrons from pulsars Geminga and PSR B0656 + 14, which had come to Earth almost a hundred times lower than the flow recorded in 2008. A large part of the output from the pulsars elementary particles are absorbed in the nebula.
Part two of pulsars to generate positrons of high energies that reach our planet, so modest that other explanations are becoming more and more likely, says one of the study’s authors, Sabrina Casanova of the Institute of nuclear physics, Polish Academy of Sciences.
So astronomers propose to explain the origin of the positrons by some other phenomena- for example, in other pulsars, microquasars, or supernova remnants. One of the basic assumptions is that such a mass of antimatter particles can be associated with the decay of a massive particle dark matter.
