The Cabinet of Ministers of Lithuania decided that the construction of about 50 kilometers from Vilnius (Belarusian Ostrovets) the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Belarusian NPP) is a threat to national security.
The government offers the Sejm to recognize the NPP unsafe representing the geographical position a threat to national security of Lithuania, the environment and human health.
“The interests of national security and people – is the most important. The position of Lithuania regarding the Belarusian NPP in a clear and principled – the construction of the Belarusian NPP cannot continue. From the outset, this construction is accompanied by serious violations and incidents, was not respected, and still not met any of the requirements of nuclear security or international environmental requirements,” – said Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Squirrels.
According to the Lithuanian government, the Belarusian NPP is violating national interests and security of all the criteria: geographic location and suitability of the selected site, technology features, nuclear safety, compliance with international safety requirements and environmental protection, intergovernmental cooperation.
“Made in the assessment reads that Belarus did not submit evidence that the site selection for nuclear power plants, which is just 40 kilometers from Vilnius, was duly taken into account Lithuania’s population, its distribution and other factors that are relevant in the case of a nuclear or radiological accident at the Belarusian NPP,” – said in the message.
We will remind, the Russian Corporation Rosatom is building the NPP in 50 km from Vilnius. The Lithuanian side has repeatedly stated that work is carried out with violations of safety standards and environmental protection. Minsk denies these claims.
