The EU has no unified position on the provision of the European Commission mandate on negotiations with Russia on the gas pipeline project Nord stream-2.
This was stated by the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, speaking after the first day of the EU summit in Brussels.
“Agreement between the EU on the mandate for the negotiations of the European Commission with Russia. I briefed the leaders of the 28 member States with the position of the European Commission. It was supported by many countries. But many States also believe that there is no need to give the EC the mandate. Anyway, we decided that the European Council should continue on this issue to work”, – said Juncker.
A number of EU countries and Ukraine oppose the gas pipeline project Nord stream-2. They claim that it will create additional leverage with Moscow. It is lobbying Russia and some European, in particular German companies.
