“The Sumela monastery (Sümela) will open its doors to visitors on may 18 after the restoration, during which it was removed four thousand tons of rock, paved 300-meter passage to the monastery, restored the ancient aqueducts, rooms and staircases,” – said the Director of culture and tourism of the province of Trabzon Ali Ayvazoglu.
He noted that the visit of the monastery will be open all year round.
The Sumela monastery is located on a steep and rocky ground at the foot of Karadag mountain in the valley Altindere. Restoration work began in 2016. The most complex stage was the removal of the rocks, which, according to experts, threatened the construction of the monastery.
