Russia used Google to intervene in the US presidential election in 2016, said the influential American newspaper the Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the results of an internal investigation.
According to interlocutors of publication, the Internet giant during the investigation found that Russian agents spent “tens of thousands of dollars” on advertising. Users from Russia engaged in spreading misinformation through such platforms as Google, YouTube, Google search, Gmail and advertising network DoubleClick.
The WP sources said that the investigation regarding the suspicious advertising is still ongoing. According to them, under suspicion, the company got a collection of ads worth about $100 thousand
The sources added that the company ascertain whether this ad bought a “Troll” or some of them were paid from ordinary Russian accounts.
WP stressed that the opening of Google can be a sign that the Kremlin’s efforts to spread disinformation on the Internet are a bigger problem than is known now.
