Blurred vision can be a symptom of serious illness

Adults with poor eyesight often face with senile dementia. Researchers from Stanford University revealed the first clear link between vision and brain function.

Elderly people who need glasses, have an increased risk of dementia. A strong Association between vision loss and reduced cognitive functioning of the brain was discovered by American scientists, who conducted a meta-analysis of two studies.

Science is known that in the elderly individual’s vision deteriorates, and among people older than 75 years, the risk of vision problems increases by 20%. Statistics show that dementia affects every 50th person aged 65 to 69 years, age is the most significant risk factor.

Scientists from the U.S. was the first in the history of science evidence of the connection between vision loss and reduced cognitive functions. This Association became less strong when the researchers took into account demographic, medical, and other factors. The study authors emphasize that their work is observational, it does not establish why, exactly, the vision loss can lead to dementia. It is possible that it’s just a coincidence, because both visual impairment and dementia observed in the elderly.

However, it is possible that the vision really affects the brain, and in this case, the treatment of vision problems in the elderly will reduce the risk of dementia. The results of this study appeared shortly after the canadian scientists found that if the person is not able to distinguish between bubble gum and gasoline, it could be a sign of dementia.
