National aerospace Agency of the USA (NASA) announced the names of 12 Americans – the main candidates-the astronauts who can go to Mars.
The selection process was more difficult than admission to Harvard University.
NASA received a record number of applications applicants — 18300 people, which means the enrolment rate is 0.7%. Harvard, by contrast, is 5.2%.
Five women and seven men entered in the new class, the largest at NASA since 2000.
Candidates will begin a two-year training at the Johnson Space center in Houston (Texas) in August. The Agency says that they can send on various missions, including research on the International space station, launches of commercial spacecraft and fly into deep space.
Vice-President Mike Pence, who presided over the ceremony in Johnson, stated that the new recruits possess the personal qualities and courage, who “will lead our nation to even greater heights.” He added: “You may the first to go to Mars.” Recall that the national Agency is sending a mission to this planet in 2030-ies.
The full list, published by NASA, looks like this: Kyle Barron (age 29), Xena, Cardman (29 years), Raj Chari (39 years), Matthew Dominic (35 years), Bob Hines (42), Warren “woody” Hoburg (31), Dr. johnny Kim (33), Rob Kalin (33), Jasmine Mohali (33), Laurel Ohara (34 years), Dr. Francisco “Frank” Rubio (41), Jessica Watkins (age 29).
