Amendments to the criminal code toughening penalties for “drunk” accident, entered into force

On 28 June, entered into force a new edition of the Criminal code with stricter punishment for driving while intoxicated. According to “Kommersant”, the law signed by President Vladimir Putin June 17, substantially changes the penalty for motorists who, sitting drunk behind the wheel, were responsible for the accident that caused the injury or death of people — even committed by negligence a crime may be classified as serious.

Thus, the amendments to article 264 of the criminal code States that if the victims of this accident received serious bodily harm, the maximum punishment for the perpetrator will be from 3 to 7 years (in the previous version — up to 4 years) of imprisonment and a ban on the profession up to 3 years. If the accident resulted in the death of a person, the prison sentence will be from 5 to 12 years old (it was from 2 to 7 years) of imprisonment if death of two and more — from 8 to 15 years (it was from 4 to 9 years).

The same is the punishment for drivers who leave the scene of an accident with victims or victims.

Also introduced liability for persons who run a light or ultra-light aircraft or small watercraft. Them for violation of safety rules of movement and operation, if the result of the come consequences in the form of heavy harm to human health or damage to more than 1 million rubles, is threatened by imprisonment for up to 2 years.
