Writers foresaw a lot of interesting.
People love predictions, especially when they come true (of course, if this is a good prediction). Prophecies are usually associated with mediums and fortune, but there are other sources. For example, literature.
Some “unexpected” predictions made on the pages of works of art, impress much more than the insight of a professional fortune-tellers. To see this for ourselves and to persuade our readers, we found in the sea of Internet books in which ideas about the future turned out to be remarkably astute.
1. Two satellites of Mars
The presence of two satellites of Mars more than 150 years before their official opening accidentally “predicted” Jonathan swift in the third part of Chapter 3 of “Gulliver’s Travels” (1726), which describes the flying island of Laputa, says that the astronomers of Laputa had discovered two satellites of Mars. 4. Credit card
In his famous socialist utopia “Looking backward” (1888) Edward Bellamy predicted credit cards that was invented 62 years later.
5. The air is
The book of Jules Verne “In the year 2889” (1889) contains among other things the concept of planes, writing messages in the sky (aerial advertising). 26 years later, in 1915, it was made for the first time at an Airshow in San Francisco.
6. Automatic sliding door
In 1899, Herbert George wells, told about automatic sliding doors in the novel “When the sleeper awakes”, which in 1960, i.e., after 60 years, was invented for use in shops, pharmacies and other institutions.
7. Tanks
In 1903 H. G. wells wrote a book called “Land battleships”, which focuses mainly on the tanks. And 13 years later during the First world war was used by the first tanks.
8. Lie detector
In 1910, Edwin Balmer and William Briggs, Macharg in the book “the achievements of Luther Trent” mention about the test on the lie detector. 14 years later, in 1924, was used by the first test for the lie detector.
9. Solar energy
In 1911 Hugo Gernsback futuristic novel “Ralph 124C 41+” (according to the author “124С 41” should read as “one-to-fore-seefor-all” — “he who foresees”) predicted the use of solar energy. And 67 years later, in 1978, invented the first solar calculators.
10. The atomic bomb
One of the most dire predictions about the use of atomic bombs was done in the novel of Herbert wells “Liberated world” (1914). In 31 years, in 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan.
11. Voice mail
After nine books of the “Liberated world” H. G. wells in the novel “Men like gods” predicted the use of voice mail. But 57 years later Voicemail became popular (1980).
12. In vitro fertilization
In 1924 in the book, “Daedalus, or science and the future” John Burdon Sanderson Haldane (abbreviated as Dzh. B. S. Haldane) told about in vitro fertilization, but just 53 years later, in 1977, the first successful in vitro fertilization.
13. Genetic engineering
In his popular book “brave new world” (1932) Aldous Huxley predicts genetic engineering. 40 years later, in 1972, was made the first work in the field of genetic engineering.
14. Government spying
In the popular novel, the dystopian “1984” (1949) George Orwell depicted a possible future world society as a totalitarian hierarchical system based on broad government spying. In 2013, on the pages of Newspapers broke the scandal associated with the total spying of the NSA of the United States.
15. Headphones
“451 degrees Fahrenheit” is a science fiction dystopian novel by ray Bradbury, published in 1953, contained the idea of the headphones, which in 2001 was brought to life American Corporation Apple (official Russian spelling “Apple”).
16. Communication satellites
In 1951 Arthur C. Clark in the book “Prelude to space” predicted the use of satellites. 14 years later, in 1965, launched the first communications satellite.
17. Virtual reality
In 1956 Arthur C. Clarke in his work “the City and the stars” talks about virtual reality video games. 10 years later, in 1966, developed the first flight simulator.
18. Water bed
In 1961 Robert Heinlein novel “Stranger in a strange land” describes water beds. Modern water bed was patented in 1971, 10 years later.
19. Space tourism
In the novel “lunar dust (1961) Arthur C. Clarke predicts that people will travel to outer space. In 2001, Dennis Tito became the first space tourist.
20. The European Union
English science fiction writer John Brunner in his book “stand on Zanzibar” (1968) predicted the creation of the European Union, which was founded on 1 November 1993 (Maastricht, Netherlands).
21. Bionic limbs
Fantasy novel Martin Caudina “Cyborg” (1972) describes the story of a man damaged organs which are replaced by mechanical devices. And in 2013 was made the first bionic prosthetic leg.
22. The audio feed in real time
The most famous work of Douglas Adams “Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy” or literally, “guide to the galaxy hitchhikers”, “Guide for traveling through the galaxy hitchhiker”, “the hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” first appeared in 1978 as a radio show on Bi-Bi-si. It reflects the idea of automatic voice translation in real-time. In 2014, Google is updating their apps, take into account this feature. We have now voice search and voice response.
23. The world wide web
In the novel “Neuromancer” (1984) William Gibson’s cyberspace is projected and the ways of breaking it. In the early 1990-ies the world wide web called the Internet became extremely popular.
24. The world’s best chess player was defeated by the computer
Raymond Kurzweil, in his book “the Age of intelligent machines” published in 1990, predicted that computers will be in mind to beat the best minds of humanity, and he was right. 11 may 1997 the computer Deep blue in a match from 6 parties defeated the world chess champion Garry Kasparov twice defeated the computer once and the party was played to a draw.
25. The lunar modules are landing modules, which were launched from Florida and then returned to Earth
One of the bold predictions presented in the book Jules Verne “From the Earth to the moon” (1865) for 104 years before the actual events. The lunar module is the lander part of the ship Apollo, built for the American program “Apollo” for a crew of two for delivery from lunar orbit to lunar surface and back. Six of these modules successfully landed on the moon in 1969-1972.
