Worldwide rallies in defense of science

In the German capital, the event attracted at least ten thousand participants.

In 610 cities around the world, thousands of people took to the “March of science”, designed to protect science from political interference. The action is timed to the International day of Mother Earth, which is in accordance with the resolution of the UN General Assembly celebrated on 22 April 2009.

According to the organizers of the global campaign on its website, the mass marches were held in Paris, London, Berlin, Brussels, Stockholm and Helsinki.

“March has caused a lot of controversy about whether scientists engage in politics,” – say the organizers of the event on the official website.

The main site talks about the organization as a “diverse, non-partisan group calling for the introduction of the scientific method to the common good”. Activists believe that politicians and leaders “are obliged to accept evidence-based science in the public interest”.

“Given the frightening tendency to undermine scientific interaction and limitation of scientific discoveries, we ask the reciprocal question: how can we not speak out in defense of science?”, – stated in the message.
