Vyatrovich told about the results of de-communization

Vyatrovich told about the attitude of Ukrainians to conduct de-communization

Director of the Ukrainian Institute of national memory Vladimir vyatrovich told about the features of the de-communization of Ukraine.

Viatrovych believes that thanks to the active support of the public his institution had fulfilled most of its tasks in the future the need for it will disappear. He says that after the removal of symbols of the totalitarian regime in Ukraine, the Institute should focus on the main functions informative and educational.

“If we move at a pace as now, then it’s a matter of a few years. There are no such institutions in the UK, France and the United States. They are mostly in post-Communist countries: Poland,Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary. Because the feature of the Communist regime was deconstruction of what we call the national memory, the rewriting of history. Therefore, to restore the memory of a century takes effort and public resources”, – stressed Volodymyr viatrovych.

He also spoke about the attitude of Ukrainian society to conduct de-communization.

“What happened in these two years (decommunization), is the most extensive public discussion about the Ukrainian past, which Ukraine had ever. Thanks decommunization in this discussion were involved hundreds of thousands of people and it is an important aspect in overcoming the totalitarian past,” – said the head of the Institute.

Viatrovych insists that decommunization did not become an imposition of one vision of history.

The law on decommunization in his opinion was an attempt to streamline the process, in particular the demolition of monuments to Lenin which began spontaneously a few years ago.

“There is no doubt that the dismantling of all these monuments is only the first step. The changing landscape is just the beginning to start the process of rethinking. I can confidently say that such processes started”, – he said.

According to him, thanks to a Pyrrhic victory, the Ukrainians will no longer bring up “schizophrenia” in their children, because on the one hand, the history books have long written about the fact that Lenin and other Communist leaders were criminals, and on the other children continued to walk the streets named after Lenin and look at the monuments to Lenin. According to Vyatrovich, is laid among the young generation of unhealthy relativism in relation to the past and the present.

Also the head of the Institute summed up the results of the de-communization in recent years.

“Decommunization in the context of deprivation of symbols of the totalitarian past, I think I made about 95%, maybe 98%. First of all we are talking about renaming the settlements. (In the Verkhovna Rada approved the renaming 987). Harder with the process of renaming place names in the villages themselves, where the prerogative belongs to local authorities. We collect such information and know it is incomplete. We have information about renaming approximately 52 thousand streets and squares. It’s somewhere over 90%”, – summed up Vladimir vyatrovich.
