Delightful, but at the same time pompous and posechenny Venice crazy, causing bouts of romanticism and nostalgia about travel.
Here I would like to be in love with a dreamer or a poet, walking arm in arm through the narrow shabby streets, whispering sweet nothings in the ear of her chosen.
And it’s not surprising that this city turns the heads of everyone who gets into it. Because it hid all the beauty of chant singers, writers and painters: bridges, cathedrals, palaces, squares, canals and streets that over time, without losing its charm, continue to beckon tourists from all corners of the planet. In our review we have collected a wonderful selection of photochromic postcards of Venice in the late nineteenth century.
In the distant past, about 1880-ies Hans Jacob Schmidt invented the process photogram, through which in the late nineteenth century appeared the possibility to launch mass production of color images. This technology required special skills and hard work. Special light sensitive emulsion was put on lithographic stones, exposing them to sunlight through a negative. For hours she dwelled in proportion to the tones of the negative, so that the stone remained the imprint of the image.
Each shade is made of a separate printed form, so in order to create one card used from ten or more printed stones. These lovely cards are made in the same method and it is far not “real” colour photography, but they could not be better convey the atmosphere of the late nineteenth century, prevailing in one of the most romantic cities in Italy.
