In the Internet posted a video of the mating of female and male praying mantis.
It turned out that the female instinctively would chew off its partner’s head before mating, and then continue the process.
The authors of the video believe this video, filmed in the Eastern mountains of California (USA), “shocking.”
Thus, as explained by behavioral ecologist and zoologist Mike Maxwell, the female mantis after mating starts to bear large amounts of eggs – not less than hundred. Any food ingested prior to mating, saves them from destruction as we will need a lot of energy until maturity of the offspring. Accordingly, the female praying mantis can lay more eggs if she ate the “father” of the future cubs.
Previously, scientists have found that mantis shrimp actively hunt small birds. Experts have documented approximately 150 such cases. Such anomalous behavior was reported in more than ten different countries. Birds, 24 species are among the victims. The largest number (70%) was recorded in the US – where the victims of the mantid often become Hummingbird.
Representatives of the scientific community concluded that the insects could threaten some bird species.
